The weekend of 12 Jan 08, we showshoed to a Forest Service cabin outside of Lava Hot Springs, ID, in the Pebble Creek area. We reserved the cabin online, and the Forest Service people were really nice and helpful. We showshoed about 6 miles up to the cabin, stayed the night, then snowshoed back on Sunday. The trail was a packed snowmobile trail, so it wasn’t hard to walk on. It was nice to have a warm cabin and a bed at the end of the hike…even though it took us a few minutes to get the lock off and we thought we were going to have a VERY cold night outside. There were some nearby private cabins that people were snowmobiling to, so it wasn’t totally isolated, but the other cabins weren’t very close. It was especially nice that the Forest Service guy had gone out there earlier in the day and warmed up the cabin for us! I learned that my 30 inch snowshoes are just entirely too big for me, so I’m going to have to get 25 inch shoes to be able to enjoy snowshoeing.
