The weekend of 20 Jul 12, Tracy and I headed up to Tosi Creek in the Gros Ventre Wilderness of Wyoming. We had checked out this trailhead a few weeks earlier, and I wanted to see if we could make it up to Tosi Basin. There isn’t an official trail going to the Basin, so I wasn’t sure what to expect. The trail starts out by crossing Tosi Creek, where you’ll get wet, and then continues along the creek for several miles. This part of the Gros Ventre area is fairly low in elevation, so it was pretty hot. Also, there was almost no tree cover, which made it that much hotter. About 7 miles in, when we were supposed to turn away from the creek to head up to Tosi Basin, I just hit a wall and didn’t feel like continuing. I think the heat and sun just zapped me, and I crashed out. So we looked for a campsite for 45 minutes, and finally settled on a spot that worked. I’ve had the hardest time finding campsites this summer…I don’t know what the problem is, but I’ve been unable to find an existing site on four different trips…it’s been weird. Anyway, we eventually pitched camp and just enjoyed the area. The area was really pretty, and we didn’t see a single person the whole weekend. We hiked a little above camp to try to get a look into Tosi Basin. We also saw some elk, including one that didn’t seem to see us as it got within a few feet of us before I let it know we were there. This was a really nice trail, but I think it would be better earlier or later in the season, just because of its elevation and its sun exposure.
